Wallburg, Lars-Ole

(1965- )
Director. Wallburg is one of several directors born and reared in the former German Democratic Republic who established himself after the regime's collapse in 1989. He completed studies at Berlin's Free University and in 1992 with Stefan Bachmann and other students founded the troupe called Theater Affekt. In 1996 Wallburg entered the German theatrical mainstream when the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg hired him as a dramaturg and directorial assistant. His 1999 production there of Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy ofthe People gained him his first invitation to the Berliner Theatertreffen, which named him "emerging director" of that year. In 2003 Wallburg succeeded Bachmann as Theater Basel's principal director.
